September 20 - 23

Our Professional Development Day on Monday was very inspiring. David Bouchard was the afternoon speaker. He is a Canadian Author, and the school library has many of his books, including his book called The Gift of Reading, which is a great read for parents and teachers.
Thank you for all parents for returning the field trip forms. I am very exciting, and we will be talking about the field trip in more depth later in the week.

This week are are doing the following...

LA - still working on Biography unit. Students will be working on an Alphabet Biography, and will need your help for this. It is due on Friday. They need to record facts for 20 letters about one of their family members. For example: My biography would be written about my mom. K - is for Karen my Mom's first name. S - is for Saskatoon, where my mom was born.

Math - We are continuing work with place value and times tables.

Science 5 - Students will learn about the effect that altitude has on temperature. We will be starting a weather monitoring assignment, where your child will be assigned a city somewhere in the world, to monitor the temperature and weather.

Science 4 - We will be reading "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss to talk about the environment. There will be a writing assignment which may come home for homework. It will be due on Thursday.

Art - Mr. Wyper, the principal is teaching art this year to the Grade 5s. Students have done some amazing work on perspective and are starting a project on claymation!

I think that is about it for this week! Have a great one :-)

September 12 - 17

Hi everyone!
This week is our first full 5 day week! We have a couple of special events this week. The grand opening of the playground is on Wednesday at 2:15pm, followed by Meet the Teacher Night at 5-7pm. Our Terry Fox run will happen on Friday at 10:45am. Please feel free to join us for the 25th anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope. Also, please send the pink field trip forms in ASAP. I am sending home Scholastic Book Orders on Monday. Please return these by Friday, and pay by cheque. Please do not send cash.

In Language Arts this week we have started a biography unit. Students are required to do a variety of assignments. Most students are working well at this. Your child may bring home books to read for this unit, but these must be returned, as they have been signed out of the public library by me and will need to be returned soon. We are reading Helen Keller, "The Story of My Life", and will be watching the play on Sept. 28th.

Math - we are working on introductory review, some problem solving, and multiplication tables. If you have time to work with your child on memorizing their times tables, this will help them succeed in this unit.

Science - We have started studying Weather. You may have seen a title page come home for homework last week. Students have been doing experiments in science class.

SS - In case you did not know, Mr. Pedersen is teaching the Grade 5s their SS this year, while I have the Grade 4s for science.

Hope you are having a great week!
